Buy an AI project: chatbots, agents and AI tools

AI projects change fast, which makes buying one attractive: a working chatbot, AI writing tool or automation can be relaunched in a niche far quicker than building a new one. Many makers build several AI tools and sell the ones they do not have time to grow.

The main risk with AI projects is cost and dependency. Most rely on paid model APIs, so a project that looks profitable can lose money as usage grows. Check the numbers per user, not just the total.

What to check before you buy

  • Find out which models and APIs are used and what they cost per request or per user.
  • Check whether prompts, fine-tuned models or datasets are included in the sale.
  • Make sure the provider's terms allow the use case and commercial resale.
  • Test output quality yourself with real inputs from your target users.
  • Ask how much of the product is the model and how much is your own code and workflow.

Handover checklist

  • Full source code in a private repository transferred to your account (not a zip sent by email).
  • Domain transferred at the registrar, with the auth code delivered only after payment clears.
  • Hosting, database and any third-party accounts (Stripe, email provider, analytics) moved or re-created in your name.
  • Environment variables and API keys rotated after handover so the seller no longer has access.
  • A short written walkthrough or recorded call covering deployment and the main parts of the code.
  • Prompts, system instructions, evaluation sets and any fine-tuned model files.
  • New API keys created on your own AI provider account.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check first in an AI project?
The API cost per user and whether the provider's terms allow your use. These two decide whether the project can be profitable.
Are prompts included in the sale?
Only if you agree on it. List prompts, datasets and model files explicitly in your agreement.
How fast can I relaunch an AI tool?
If the handover is clean, often within a few days: you swap in your own API keys, domain and payment account.
